5 things I learned from Robin Sharma
5 things I learned from attending a leadership seminar with Robin Sharma.
On the 25th of July I attended the Leadership Redefined seminar in Johannesburg where Robin Sharma was the keynote speaker. These 5 things stood out for me the most.
1) Be humble, no matter the magnitude of your success.
Robin Sharma is not only a multiple best-selling author but also a world-renowned, highly sought-after and ultra-successful leadership coach. Some of his clients are Microsoft, IBM, Starbucks, FedEx & NASA, to name a few.
However, as soon as Robin Sharma took to the stage to share his wisdom to 3500+ eager listeners, the pedestal that everyone put him on vanished. For the next 90 minutes we were awed by the knowledge he shared with us with the deepest respect and humility.
Be humble, respectful and down-to-earth. Share your knowledge and celebrate your success without having to pin a status or title on it.
2) Be Inspired
Today, before you open your laptop, check your email or run into your first meeting, ask yourself the following:
– What difference will I make today?
– Who will I inspire today?
– Who will I become today?
Now go out and make this an extraordinary day! Do your best work, be a master at it and strive for excellence! Let others around you be inspired by what you do, not only today, and tomorrow, but every day after that.
3) Be grateful
You cannot expect to receive, if you cannot be grateful for what you already have. Before you go to sleep, take a few minutes to reflect on your day. Be grateful for the lessons you learned, the things you achieved and those that you already have. If there is only one thing you do today, be grateful. It paves the way for happiness & success.
4) Be prepared to be uncomfortable
If you want to be successful, be prepared to be uncomfortable. Ultimate success lies beyond the walls that surround our comfort zones. Robin Sharma puts it this way: “Leaders are inspired by change, victims are afraid of it.”
Don’t be the victim that’s stuck inside his / her comfort zone of excuses. Today, decide to conquer something that’s holding you back – whether it’s that dreaded phone call, standing up for yourself, voicing your opinion, striking up a conversation with a stranger or simply getting up a few minutes earlier.
“Your days are your life in miniature” so lean into your fear, go beyond your comfort zone and prepare to see magic happen!
Start small and celebrate the win! It not only feels great, but also boosts your confidence, puts a smile on your face and makes that comfort zone fence seem a little bit smaller…
5) Know where you’re going
If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know how to get there?
List the 5 most important things that you want to achieve by December 31st 2014.
Look at this list every morning and every night. It will remind you what inspires you, what comfort zones you need to escape and most importantly what you can be grateful for already.
Enjoy the ride, celebrate the wins, learn your lessons and be humble along the way.
