What the h*ll am I doing here?
Over the past few months I have confronted myself with the seemingly horrific and somewhat intimidating question of “what the h*ll am I actually doing here?! What is my purpose?”
Take a moment and try answer that question for yourself, paying attention to the murky, underlying pattern that starts to emerge.
“Work, work, work with unmatched return” sound familiar? How about “constantly trying to please other people, sometimes just so that that they (hopefully) pay some attention to you in return…” and what about the chore that is “running after people that owe you”? Or this one: “trying to contend with people that have a recurring habit of letting you down along the way?” Perhaps its “working for yourself but somehow always for someone else’s reward”. I’m sure if you take a few minutes and dig deep enough you can put together a long list…
Now here comes the raw and shocking reality check: No one cares! You can rant and rave about it all you want, updating statuses and sending tweets. You can ooze your disappointment and let the world know, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a few “likes” and sympathetic comments in return here and there. But in actual fact, no one cares! And that’s a good thing, isn’t it?
Of course it is! Even if your social network did care, would it really make things that much better? Wake up! It’s back to reality in the morning…
I tried the whole “feeling sorry for yourself” bit – a couple of times. In retrospect it was nothing more than a waste of time.
After a bit of semi-forceful reality checking, in good part while reading Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now, it all boiled down to one conclusion: Life is what you make of it. Note, the defining word here is YOU! Yes YOU, and not what everyone else tries to make of it…on your behalf!
Stop trying to please everyone else! Herbert Bayard Swope (first recipient of the Pulitzer Prize) puts it simply: “I can’t give you a surefire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.”
Take time to do things for you. Take time for yourself and spend this time doing the things that make you happy! The things that bring joy to your life. You know, the things that make you jump out of bed in the morning, the things that give you butterflies in your tummy and let your adrenalin rush in a good way. Most importantly, take time to define what make you tick! What makes you YOU?
Time for ACTION
Now grab a piece of paper, put on some of your favourite music, sit outside in the sun (or somewhere else that makes you comfortable) and start writing a list of your goals, your ambitions, your ideas and your passions. Look at this list every day, at least twice. Even better if you re-write this list every morning after you’ve woken up and at night before you go to sleep. Think about these goals, feel them, believe in them and most importantly, smile when you do this, because you know you’re on the way to achieving every single one of them!
Live your life with purpose. You are what you are… And you are one awesome human being!
Always “believe in what makes you feel passionate about life!”
I believe in you and so should you!
